Life is full of challenges. From day to day one person may hit multiple speed bumps influencing their next action or belief. Life is formed by the challenges which individuals face each and every day and without those challenges, who knows what kind of life we would live?
Just like every other person and living being on the planet, I face challenges on a daily basis. Whether it’s deciding what to order for lunch, or what to major in, challenges have a heavy influence on the life path in which a person takes. I am finding this to be true as I am finishing out my first year of college. The struggles that I have faced this year, have led me to where I am now, and have influenced where I would like to go from here. It’s almost as if I am grateful for the challenges that I have had to face in the past year, even though during I hated them, because they have taught me more about the world than any class could have and I am almost excited to see what new challenges life will throw at me next.
Marlene’s post on the creativity of challenges sparked an interesting train of thought for me. On one hand, the entire subject of environmental studies can feel like a massive all-enveloping hole of quicksand. However, on the other hand, the subject allows for one to approach a problem with a sense of creativity that, in a sense, differs greatly from all other subjects. Due to the inclusivity and broad span of environmental studies, one is able to incorporate their knowledge of many other realms of study into the creativity that is required in order to overcome the various challenges that environmentalists are faced with in today’s world.
It is even a challenge just to be a student of environmental studies due to the fact that there is never a solid solution to environmental problems. It is hard to sit in class each day learning about the never-ending list of issues and all of the complexities that envelope each one. Nothing within the subject of environmental studies is straightforward which is why, like Marlene stated, we must uncover new and inventive ways to compromise in order to live a more harmonious life alongside the environment.
