Ecomodernism is the name given to a movement endorsing human progress and technological innovation in the context of environmental issues. While (like postnaturalism) ecomodernism is relatively recent and its ideas diffuse, ecomodernism has particularly been championed by The Breakthrough Institute of Oakland, CA. Some representative concepts are found in the related Wikipedia article, as well as via ecomodernism.org—which, as the astute reader will see, emphasize decoupling of human development from nature, a relatively recent addition to ecomodernist thought that has been criticized by postnaturalists, and that may not be a necessary corollary of its emphasis on progress and endorsement of technology. Similar to postnaturalism, then, ecomodernism as a contemporary environmental perspective is unsettled and, though its broad cornucopian features may be clear, many of its details are unresolved.
