Build On: The Second Stage of Thesis Expansion

February 15, 2017 By Hannah Smay

This week I expanded my thesis, in progress. I decided to start from the beginning in order to attempt to achieve some sort of balance, but I ran out of time before I got to the end. As a result, this thesis is definitely heavy in the top of the hourglass and very sparse in the bottom of the hourglass. I was responding to my peer Lex’s comments about making the top of the hourglass more clear.

This week was really dedicated to clarifying the top of the hourglass and being more detailed and specific. I added more background about literary theory, including Aristotle’s “catharsis.” I felt like I was running around all over the place, collected bits and pieces from the scholarship across all my classes, from the posts I made last semester, and from my other thesis.

About Me

I am graduating from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon with a BA in English and Environmental Studies. I explore the power stories have to render and transform places, people, and systems. Through my undergraduate scholarship, I aim to better articulate the relationships between humanity and place by examining lessons from the humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences in conversation.
