The below summary of our GE curriculum from 1985 to 1993 was developed by Prof. Karen Gross with archival support by Zachariah Selley.
- Inquiry sequence: Three courses spread through the student’s time at LC
- Basic Inquiry – taken fall in the first-year. Syllabus determined by committee. Readings drawn from humanities, social sciences, sciences, and fine arts. Emphasis on asking questions, writing, reading.
- Critical Inquiry – taken sophomore or junior year. Course should deal with issues about human community (i.e., gender relations’ cross-cultural and international understanding; science, technology, and values). Course belongs to a department and through application is cross-listed.
- Advanced Inquiry – taken junior or senior year. Interdisciplinary course that challenges students to collaborate with those outside their major. Classes are departmental but cross-listed.
- Perspectives (a.k.a. distribution)
- Humanities – 2; Natural Sciences – 2; Social Sciences – 2; Fine Arts – 1
Remember when?
- LC was on the quarter system. Students were expected to take 3 five-credit courses a term. To complete this sequence, students had slightly more slots for courses than they do on semesters.
- LC offered two different degrees. B.A. = Core + two years of foreign language (i.e., test into 301). B.S. = Core + 20 credit hours of science/social science
