The Lewis & Clark Subcommittee on General Education (SoGE) site was designed in spring 2016 by Prof. Jim Proctor to serve three primary purposes:
- Resource availability. As we learn more about general education, we’ll share what we’ve learned with you here. Some initial examples include the history of GE at Lewis & Clark (an ongoing project we launched for the Feb. 2 Groundhog Day faculty event); a schematic diagram, with linked examples, of GE models (derived in part from Paul Handstedt’s General Education Essentials); and a list of literature resources on general education and the larger context of liberal education.
- Transparency. SoGE was commissioned by Lewis & Clark’s Curriculum Committee to study and report on options for GE reform…and yet any casual glance at our recent history of GE reform suggests that (much like many other higher education institutions) we’ve struggled in past to move forward with GE in a creative and lasting manner. This site gives the LC community a way to keep in touch with our conversations, so as to foster and promote greater trust among all of us as we proceed. Please consider subscribing to receive email notifications of new posts!
- Feedback. There is nothing like face-to-face conversation to discuss opportunities and challenges facing our shared curriculum. But not everyone can regularly attend our meetings, and sometimes people like to compose their thoughts “on paper” rather than say them out loud. Here are the ways you can join our conversation and provide feedback, including on this site.
This SoGE site was inspired in part by the work of philosopher Christopher Long and others toward an interactive general education site at Penn State.
