What are categories and tags?
In WordPress, categories and tags are both ways to organize content. They can be found on the right sidebar when you are editing a post. Categories are hierarchical; you will almost always click on one or more of them for each post (but you don’t have to click on all tags in a hierarchy). Tags are nonhierarchical, you type them in, and you will use them much less frequently, if at all. In addition, we have a special kind of tag called global tags on the DS multisite; they will be used in future to display similar content across multiple sites.
There are specific ways we use categories and tags on our DS multisite depending on whether you’re posting on a group site or your own site, as summarized in the table below. Example: if you are posting on a group site, definitely check applicable categories, but do not add tags, and add global tags only as directed by your instructor.
Categories | Tags | Global Tags | |
Group Site | Check all applicable | Don’t use | Use only as directed |
Your Site | Create/check all applicable | Use as you wish | Use only as directed |
