In this optional Post Extras Skill you’ll learn some advanced and really useful things you can add to a post. You will be composing another post as part of this Skill; this post will not be viewable by the public (i.e., non-logged in users), but it will be viewable by other logged in DS multisite users at Lewis & Clark.
- Have you earned the Post Basics Skill badge yet? If not, go back and do that first!
- Remember, you need to be logged in to complete any Skills submission.
To earn this Skill, follow the below steps, then follow the submission requirements at bottom.
- Like the last Skill, keep this Post Extras Skill window open, then open a new tab and add another new post to this site.
- Remember to add the three things you learned in Post Basics: a good title, the category (this time: Post Extras), and any content you wish. Feel free to add a featured image and inline image, though these are not required.
- You will add three advanced things to this post…please read the directions carefully! These are powerful but a bit tricky.
- A link. A link takes you somewhere: it consists of the text you see, and the URL you go to when you click that text. (Don’t just paste the raw link…that’s a bit ugly.) To do this: select some text in your post, then click the “Insert/edit link” button and enter any URL you wish.
- Some shortcode. Shortcode is code inserted in [square brackets] on your post or page that creates some outcome when viewed. Most shortcodes come with plugins; the one you’ll use comes with ZotPress, a way to display Zotero bibliographies. Just add this shortcode on its own line in your post: [zotpress style="nature" sortby="title" abstracts ="yes" limit="10"], and feel free to edit the parameters inside quotes using the Zotero help here.
- An embed. An embed displays content from another site on your post or page. Some embeds are automatic in WordPress: just paste in the URL to a number of platforms (e.g., YouTube). What you will do here is more powerful: it’s called an iframe (see here), and is used by many platforms for you to embed their content. For this Skill, choose any Google document you wish and follow the procedure here, making sure to click the Embed tab to copy the iframe embed code. Then change this embed code to [iframe] shortcode, following the instructions on the help page for iframe embeds. Then paste this special [iframe] embed shortcode on its own line anywhere in your post.
- You did it! Click Publish, then view your post to make sure all the above is correct. If need be, simply edit your post again.
Submission requirements: In the submission box, paste a link to the image post you composed above. Then in one or two sentences, summarize anything new or useful (or challenging!) you learned here. This Skill will be approved by a student helper checking your submission, so make sure it’s fully complete.
