This program is designed by the Psychology Department and focuses on social issues and the provision of social services in England, especially in London, and the relationship of psychology and the social sciences to community welfare.  In addition to an internship placement at social welfare agencies in London, students will focus on relevant social and economic questions through classes, lectures, group discussions, field trips, and attendance at cultural events. The program is open to Psychology majors who have completed the introductory sequence of Intro Psychology statistics, and Psychology Methodology; to other Social Science majors who have completed Intro Psych and their programs’ quantitative and research methods courses; and to other majors who have relevant and comparative preparation. Although most of our time will be spent in London, group and individual travel to outlying communities will enable students to experience the social welfare issues and provision in a variety of settings.

Spring Break Abroad - We had spring ‘holidays’ this week and it couldn’t come sooner. While I’ve been enjoying my internship at Envision and learning a lot in all of my classes, it was a breath of fresh air to be able to relax and sleep in a bit. My boyfriend was able to fly in, so we went […]
London Journal Entry - Studying abroad so far has been challenging, exciting, and full of new experiences. Last weekend I traveled outside of the U.K. to Ireland and got to see Lewis & Clark students studying abroad there, and experience a culture completely different to that of England. Going to pubs and chatting with LC students in a foreign […]
Cultural Differences in London - I’ve never really worked in an office before, so it’s hard to know if some of the little details that I see are really due to a different culture or just because it’s a more formal work setting than I’m used to. One big thing that I’ve noticed is that the office is very quiet […]
Trip to Stonehenge and Bath - So far I have to say the best trip that we went on, as a group was yesterday’s day trip to Stonehenge and Bath. As a person who loves history and Jane Austen, this was the perfect day. Before we went to Stonehenge I was already forewarned that it would be next to a highway, […]
Working in Brixton - My internship experience has been incredible so far, I am very fortunate to be interning at the Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation, a charity in Brixton that aims to help the Latin American community in London. This organization offers services such as English classes and legal advising with immigration and benefits. The Latin American community […]
Journal Entry London 2017 - At Harington Scheme, many of the students/learners face difficult learning and physical disabilities that must be kept track of by the staff. For example, one of the leaners has pretty extreme epilepsy, which requires high doses of prescription medication to keep under control. On a weekly basis, they have mild, non-violent seizures that last about […]
Bath - What a great week. This week we went to Stonehenge and Bath. So far this was my favorite day outing. Originally I was skeptical of Stonehenge and its’ magnificence, but going there completely changed my mind. Two weekends ago a few of us went to Dublin which was also a fantastic time. There is so […]
Prisoners’ Advice Service Internship - This week at my internship, I continued working on some grant reports. I was able to take a break from this, however, when my supervisor invited me to go to a meeting. At Prisoners’ Advice Service, they have various caseworkers who work with specific groups of prisoners. One of the caseworkers that I went to […]
Work Experience in London - I have been getting along well with my coworkers; I was able to have a lengthy conversation with my coworker, Sam, when I arrived to work fifteen minutes early one day, and he even provided some recommendations of places to explore in England and told me about “football games” here! However, I was under the […]
Cities are Like People - To me, cities are like people – you can tell pretty immediately if you’re going to get along. London has been one of those friends you’ll say hi to and maybe sit down to lunch with when you happen to run into them. They’re nice enough. They have plenty to offer but you’ve never felt […]
