The intention: to bring earth day to life!
As the new EA coordinator, I hope to bring the community together for an Earth Day event this Friday April 22. In general, earth day to me has always been taking the time to think about the planet we live on. Expanding on this idea I mean really taking the time on Earth Day to consider how our actions affect the environment we live in. Also to think about if there is anything we can do in that present moment to change or transform that impact we have into something positive. Last Earth Day I happened to be on a beach in Florida. I was already picking up trash even though I didn’t realize it was Earth Day, but I am happy that I was able to contribute! In previous years I have planted native plants and flowers to celebrate.
I would really apreciate if this Earth Day for EA will have some reflections of this as well. Hopefully we can all join together and talk about what Earth Day means to all of us, eat some wonderful snacks, possibly do some creative recycled art, and watch a nature documentary. ( I am open to suggestions!) It would be great for EA to gather together as a community because it is nearing the end of the year and it is time for us to have some fun last times together.
On Saturday I am bringing students to an ivy pull at Tryon Creek. It will be from 8:15 to 12:25 and there will be coffee and snacks in the morning where we will meet up. (In front of Templeton!) If you want to go RSVP, email Jay Chu at [email protected]
I am so glad that this opportunity presented itself the day after earth day. I hope that this event will connect our L&C community with the larger Tryon community. It would also be really amazing to meet other volunteers there that similarly have a passion for environmental action. In addition, the intention of these events is to not only celebrate earth day, but to also celebrate the members of EA and how we have become a community over this past school year. It is important to reflect how we have changed from the beginning of the year, what we may have done differently, and what we can leave behind for the EA members next year!
