Urban Greenspaces and Development in Portland

This project explores the distribution of green spaces and their relationship to population development and urban sprawl in Portland, Oregon. Urban green spaces provide numerous benefits to residents by reducing air pollution, encouraging physical activity and increasing a sense of community. These green spaces are closely linked to issues of environmental justice because they have historically been less accessible to low-income populations and people of color. Through a mix of qualitative and quantitative analysis our team examines the distribution of green spaces in Portland and how it is affected by differences in population growth and demographic discrepancies. This topic also touches on the continuous battle over types of land use and whether priority should be given to maintaining natural areas.
