Turkish Mosque Visit and Islam in Germany - Within the course of my travels through Europe this semester, I have visited an immense number of churches and cathedrals—so many that I would probably be better off writing a book about them than a blog post. I recently got to see something a bit different though, when my Contemporary German Society class took a […]
Schnitzel and I: A Love Story - This story begins where it ends: Germany. Before coming here I’d only the faintest notion of what a “Schnitzel” was. Though I had taken for granted that it was both German and edible, I wasn’t inclined to further investigate this phenomenon until it began appearing on the menus of my every dining experience. I […]
‘Tis the Season… To Get a Flu Shot! - There are many things that never stop surprising me about Berlin, and Germany! I’ve come to have a true appreciation for the people, the city, the culture… I don’t think I could have picked a better time in my studies to spend an extended period overseas for the first time, either. My host family has […]
Berlin Transit - The transportation system here in Berlin has been a huge part of my experience abroad. Like my fellow students, I take it every day to and from our classes in the central district Mitte as well as to any part of the city I want in my spare time. Consequently, I have spent quite a […]
Czech This Out: Adventures in Prague - We had our first week of classes last week and though they were interesting and all that, I won’t bore you with all the details because I’m sure you can all imagine what an Art History/Regular History class is like. With one notable exception to that: our field trip on Friday! Our History of Berlin […]
Leipzig - Last weekend a friend and I took a day trip to Leipzig, a beautiful city about 2 hours south of Berlin. It’s famous for being Johann Sebastian Bach’s hometown, and we got to see the site of his childhood home, the church where he was a choir master, as well as where he is buried. […]
The Bauhaus School - Yesterday we took a field trip to Dessau, a city two hours south of Berlin which is home to the world famous Bauhaus art school. The Bauhaus art school is known for its innovative curriculum which combined fine art with the mastery of craft. While it is most famous for its architecture program, the Bauhaus school […]
Street Food Thursday in Kreuzberg - Last Thursday, I got to experience a really cool, Portland-like part of Berlin- Street Food Thursday in the neighborhood for Kreuzberg! Every Thursday night from 5-10 pm, dozens of pop-up food carts are set up in Markethalle Neun, selling everything from British Meat Pies to Korean dumplings. There was even a food cart with spaghetti-flavored […]
What it Means to Belong to a Country - Studying abroad in Berlin has given me a new way of looking at my national and cultural identity. Cultural identity has been a big topic for me in college. Berlin has a unique history of how people identify with their own country, and studying abroad in this city has encouraged me to further think about […]
Cuisine in the Capital: Eating Like A Berliner - It’s hard to believe that I’m nearing my last month in Berlin. I arrived here over two months ago, but it feels as though it’s been maybe two weeks. In honor of the months I’ve spent here, and the short time that remains, I decided to dedicate this blog post to my favorite topic: food! […]
