Last Thursday, I got to experience a really cool, Portland-like part of Berlin- Street Food Thursday in the neighborhood for Kreuzberg! Every Thursday night from 5-10 pm, dozens of pop-up food carts are set up in Markethalle Neun, selling everything from British Meat Pies to Korean dumplings. There was even a food cart with spaghetti-flavored ice cream. Sadly, I didn’t try it, but it’s on the list for this week! I did, however, eat a sandwich-sized sushi roll stuffed with shredded beef (better than it sounds) and a waffle coated in cinnamon and sugar.
Hundreds of people were there. To my surprise, most of them were English speakers so it felt like I had been teleported back to America for the hour which, I admit, felt pretty cool. Everyone was drinking, over-indulging themselves in the amazing food, and chatting with friends. It was a very welcoming crowd. For anyone planning on traveling to Berlin, I would highly recommend attending Street Food Thursday and witnessing one of the many things that makes Berlin such a great city to be in.
