Research Question: How have perspectives on Vietnamese women’s sexuality changed over the last century and how does that translate to current public displays of affection in Vietnamese urban youth?
Confucianism, Doi Moi, and French Colonialism have all impacted women’s attitudes towards sexual relationships differently over the last century. My goal in this research project is to analyze these areas and attempt to draw connections among them in relation to observations I make of young urban Vietnamese citizens.
It is important to note that Vietnamese today have a very different outlook on marriage and love than their parents did. During certain times during the revolution, women did not marry for love. Currently in Vietnam, society and the socialist party encourage couples to direct their attention and objects of affection toward creating an economically productive family. How does the government and inherent changes in society reflect public displays of affection?
