Like many other developing countries, Vietnam faces environmental degradation due to its rapid economic growth. One major problem is improper waste management exacerbated by an increasing urban population and changing consumer habits. With higher incomes come changing consumer habits, more convenience foods, and more waste. This waste is usually plastics, Styrofoam and other food packaging materials. This is a problem for Vietnam’s landfills, which already pose a serious environmental threat. Ideally, says Ngoc, we would reduce waste before it hits the waste stream (2009), so we must examine consumer habits to see where waste is coming from and gauge the public awareness of what happens to items once they are discarded. My observational research includes seeing what options are available for waste disposal, seeing if and how people use these options, and then using a participatory method so I can see where targeted populations think I should dispose of trash.
