Sister Sadie

January 22, 2015 By Claire McCarthy

After a week of passing by Sister Sadie, I finally decided to go in. The exterior of this small restaurant is simple and perfect. Blue-gray paint frames the large windows and the bIMG_0280right crimson door. Upon entering the establishment, I am greeted by a beautiful white tile coffee bar covered in fresh pastries. I immediately knew I made the right decision. The minimalist design continued inside the café through the light-gray wooden floors and bursts of accent colors. I was escorted into a second room to be seated. Somehow, the second room was even more beautiful than the first. Three light-gray walls are accompanied by a fourth salmon oneBrass spotlights hang from the ceiling. Each table is the same—a perfect square—topped with a small brass cup of sugar and a violet flower. I am seated with a view of the street and handed a crisp white menu. And oh my, the menu.

I am pleasantly surprised by Sister Sadie’s unique selection. Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flares amplify classic breakfast dishes. Porridge with toasted seeds, crystallized ginger and berry rose compote, pancakes with sweet ricotta crème, mint, and hazelnut-almond praline, and beans with a soft egg, herbs, whipped feta, and lemon yogurt are just a few of the breakfast dishes served by Sister Sadie. The contemporary design of this restaurant transcends into the food—a classic base topped with a modern and diverse twist. I order a cranberry oat scone, accompanied by a trio of homemade jams, and a cappuccino. The scone is perfectly crisp and soft, tangy and sweet. The foam on my cappuccino is fluffy and thick. Good scone, good coffee. I’m happy.

While I sit, eat, anIMG_0278d eavesdrop on other people’s conversations, I can’t help but make a connection between present-day Dublin and Sister Sadie. Dublin is a diverse, multi-cultural city but still holds onto its traditional roots. I can feel the Celtic influences seep through the hustle and bustle of this modernized city. Furthermore, Sister Sadie embodies the new Dublin through its traditional, yet contemporary, design and cuisine. I am very happy that I made the impromptu decision to dine in this exquisite little café; it will surely not be the last time.

Diving Deeper into Coral Reef Ecology at Lady Elliot Island

Another day in paradise. Today marked our third day on Lady Elliot Island, and it’s easy to see that we’re all getting used to this. Waking up early isn’t a challenge with the bright sun and the cacophony of seabirds, but for once no one is upset, as our first activity is a quick snorkel […]

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Today marked our last day at Carnarvon, with our next stop to be the Great Barrier Reef. Although we’ve stayed at Carnarvon Gorge longer than expected due to the cyclone off the eastern coast, it allowed us to explore even more of the beautiful park. We were woken again by the sounds of Laughing Kookaburras, […]

Great Times at Great Kepple

Great Times at Great Kepple

April 7, 2018 Our first full day on Great Kepple Island! We spent the morning in lecture learning about coral, coral reefs (there’s a difference!), conservation and the general weather trends that can dictate the biogeography of the ocean. While some had come into this program with invertebrate knowledge from classes at Lewis and Clark, […]

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

On April 10th I woke up to the sound of the train wheels clacking. It was 5:30 in the morning. I was so tired but also so thrilled to be traveling to a new destination. Soon after we woke from the comfy and unique accommodation of the train, we all gathered our belongings and hopped […]

Under the Milky Way Tonight

Under the Milky Way Tonight

On April 3, 2018 we stayed at the Takarakka bush resort in Carnarvon Gorge. One of the many highlights of Carnarvon George is the sky. Specifically, the entire Milky Way. Which, as our tutor brought up, used to be a sight that everyone could see. It is because of our cities light pollution that […]
