Planning on visiting Chennai? Here are some great activities you can find around!
If you’re looking for a cultural visit, leave Chennai and head to Mylapor. Mylapor has a beautiful temple that is quite large and hard to miss. It has a huge water tank behind it that is closed to the public. The streets surrounding the temple are well laid out which makes getting around a whole lot easier. This is one place where you will be able to find a silk store, a classical dance store, and many jewelry stores.
Interested in water sports? You can find surfing and sea kayaking Covelong Surf School in Kovalum Cove about 40 minutes south of Chennai. The surf school is fantastic! You can rent a board or a kayak and just go out on your own or you can take a lesson. Covelong was the first surf school to ever open on the southwestern coast of India. The owner is a passionate surfer and teacher who will be more than happy to share with you the sport that changed his life.
Chennai is broken into smaller neighborhoods and if you ever find yourself near a small area called “Beasant Nagar” it’s worth the trip to visit to the Brew Room. The interior is a blend of French and Italian and they offer a variety of coffee styles. My favorite thing about the Brew Room though is their amazing vegan pumpkin spice muffins. They hit the spot when you’re missing fall and all of the usual pumpkin flavored treats.
If you’re interested in getting a beautiful traditional saree, look no further than Pothi’s in T. Nagar. Pothi’s has an incredible staff that will bend over backwards to help you with everything you need. I purchased my saree at a different store but picked up my underskirt and blouse (the shirt that is worn with a saree) from Pothi’s and they still helped me wrap it. I felt like a princess when they were done. It was magical to say the least!
