For Student Participants

Congratulations on being selected to participate in a Lewis & Clark College overseas program, and welcome to the Lewis & Clark Around the World site, where you will share your experiences with others. Here is some guidance to get you started.

  1. This is your opportunity to build and demonstrate skills in public digital scholarship on a Lewis & Clark website. As you construct your posts and related content, remember that they will be publicly viewable and will represent Lewis & Clark College. If you have questions or concerns, talk with your overseas leader, and make sure to ask them for clarification on what they expect regarding the content you share on this site.
  2. Once you can login, make sure to (a) finalize your user profile (“Edit My Profile” under username at upper right; confirm display name/bio/avatar) and (b) confirm your student record. You can go back to this record to add any projects you do as part of your overseas program. Your user profile avatar and bio will show up alongside your student record info on a nice participant landing page you can share with family and friends, so they can readily see your work. (Each program will have a landing page you can share as well.)
  3. The main thing you’ll do on this site involves posts. Here is some basic info on adding posts, and here are some important things to remember:
    • Make sure to click your program category for each and every post (e.g., Australia Spring 2015, Cuba Spring 2016, etc.); otherwise they won’t show up on your program landing page and your program leader may not find them! And, no need to check your program’s parent site (e.g., don’t check Australia or Cuba).
    • We strongly recommend that you geotag your posts and add imagery (do check that it’s not copyright protected…the help page tells you how).
    • Make your title clear and interesting, and please do check spelling and grammar.
    • You can save drafts, then when ready click Publish; you can edit published posts at any time.
    • If you have your own ds.lclark.edu site, we ask you to do your post here, then link to it using the Page Links To plugin on your site. You can also simply point visitors on your site to your participant page on this site.
    • Note: If you have a mobile device and are bringing it overseas with you, consider installing the WordPress app so you can post directly from your device!
  4. Many overseas programs include scholarly projects. There’s a project form your program leader may ask you to complete for each of your projects: it includes the project title, a geotag and quick summary, one or more links to related URLs and a final document, and the related overseas program and student participants.

We’ll provide training during your overseas program orientation, or just feel free to ask your program leader or the Overseas Office for help at any time.

Diving Deeper into Coral Reef Ecology at Lady Elliot Island

Diving Deeper into Coral Reef Ecology at Lady Elliot Island

Another day in paradise. Today marked our third day on Lady Elliot Island, and it’s easy to see that we’re all getting used to this. Waking up early isn’t a challenge with the bright sun and the cacophony of seabirds, but for once no one is upset, as our first activity is a quick snorkel […]

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Today marked our last day at Carnarvon, with our next stop to be the Great Barrier Reef. Although we’ve stayed at Carnarvon Gorge longer than expected due to the cyclone off the eastern coast, it allowed us to explore even more of the beautiful park. We were woken again by the sounds of Laughing Kookaburras, […]

Great Times at Great Kepple

Great Times at Great Kepple

April 7, 2018 Our first full day on Great Kepple Island! We spent the morning in lecture learning about coral, coral reefs (there’s a difference!), conservation and the general weather trends that can dictate the biogeography of the ocean. While some had come into this program with invertebrate knowledge from classes at Lewis and Clark, […]

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

On April 10th I woke up to the sound of the train wheels clacking. It was 5:30 in the morning. I was so tired but also so thrilled to be traveling to a new destination. Soon after we woke from the comfy and unique accommodation of the train, we all gathered our belongings and hopped […]

Under the Milky Way Tonight

Under the Milky Way Tonight

On April 3, 2018 we stayed at the Takarakka bush resort in Carnarvon Gorge. One of the many highlights of Carnarvon George is the sky. Specifically, the entire Milky Way. Which, as our tutor brought up, used to be a sight that everyone could see. It is because of our cities light pollution that […]
