This program concentrates on the history, culture, social, and socio-economic institutions of Morocco. Students will spends the majority of the semester living with host families in the cities of Marrakesh and Fez with excursions to the rural areas of southern Morocco and other cities throughout the program. Prior to departure, students will study Modern Standard Arabic and a more intensive Moroccan Arabic course will be taken while abroad. Some of the key topics considered will be the diverse religious heritage of the region, Morocco’s distinctive architecture and urban landscape, colonial and post-colonial experiences, modernization and globalization, and women and gender relations.
