New Zealand

This program concentrates on the culture and biology of the unique country of New Zealand and allows Biology majors to meet both the two-course international studies requirement as well as Biology major requirements while abroad. A major theme that will be studied is the interplay of isolation, colonization, and extinction in islands with a focus on the “lost” part of the ancient Gondwonan super-continent, New Zealand. The country is rich in biological and cultural history that exemplifies the theme of isolation and repeated colonization.

As a “lost” part of the ancient Gondwonan super-continent, New Zealand has a rich ecological and cultural history that exemplifies the theme of isolation and repeated colonization. The program focuses on both the cultural and ecological nuances of this unique location, allowing students to immerse themselves in the cultural history and biodiversity of New Zealand.

New Zealand Spring 2015

A group of 25 students studied the interplay of isolation, colonization, and extinction on the islands. Cultural ecology, colonization by Polynesians, and secondary colonization by Europeans, as well as biogeography, evolution, and physiological ecology is the focus of this program.
