Overseas program(s):  India Fall 2015
Overseas project(s):   Re-valuing women and girls as investment: Women Empowerment in India
Expected graduation: May 2017
About me: I am a third year student at Lewis & Clark studying Rhetoric & Media and minoring in Gender Studies. My studies have centered around how humans rhetorically construct their realities and place social meaning collectively that influence the ways in which we experience the world. I am particularly interested in how people, societies, and cultures understand and construct and place meaning on gender. I enjoy reading, meeting and learning from new people, sharing meals with loved ones, and spending as much time outside in nature.

- All is fair in love and war. But in India that expression should also include an extra clause: All is fair in love and war and driving. Seriously though, it is unbelievable how drivers maneuver through traffic here. It would appear that the one rule of driving is that there are no rules. In fact, […]
Blending in by Standing Out: Chennai’s Colors - There is so much to be learned from the world that surrounds us; during my time in India I have constantly been learning new things about this new world, but also about myself. I find myself constantly inspired by all that surrounds me, and lately, I have been really inspired by the colors of Chennai. […]
Explaining Gender Discrimination via Bathrooms? -   Namaste Y’all, My time in Delhi has been simultaneously fun and difficult; I find myself constantly adjusting, reflecting, and engaging with my surroundings. All five of my senses have been fully stimulated. On one of my first jet-lagged nights in Delhi, I found myself reflecting on a quote from Charlotte’s Web. The quote is […]
Re-valuing Women and Girls: A way to end the gendercide in India - Abbey Griscom India Program Re-valuing women and girls as investment: A way to end the gendercide in India   When deciding what I wanted to focus my research project on for India I wanted to partake in a project that I found interesting and challenging. I have been interested in the gendercide, which I will […]
Summer Reading Assignment - 1) Describe an aspect of ancient Indian history that is likely to have continuing relevance in contemporary India. How might your time in India benefit from having some awareness of this period of Indian history?   In Chapter One John McLeod states that, “To many Westerners, India is first and foremost a land of religion. Diving Deeper into Coral Reef Ecology at Lady Elliot Island

Diving Deeper into Coral Reef Ecology at Lady Elliot Island

Another day in paradise. Today marked our third day on Lady Elliot Island, and it’s easy to see that we’re all getting used to this. Waking up early isn’t a challenge with the bright sun and the cacophony of seabirds, but for once no one is upset, as our first activity is a quick snorkel […]

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Today marked our last day at Carnarvon, with our next stop to be the Great Barrier Reef. Although we’ve stayed at Carnarvon Gorge longer than expected due to the cyclone off the eastern coast, it allowed us to explore even more of the beautiful park. We were woken again by the sounds of Laughing Kookaburras, […]

Great Times at Great Kepple

Great Times at Great Kepple

April 7, 2018 Our first full day on Great Kepple Island! We spent the morning in lecture learning about coral, coral reefs (there’s a difference!), conservation and the general weather trends that can dictate the biogeography of the ocean. While some had come into this program with invertebrate knowledge from classes at Lewis and Clark, […]

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

On April 10th I woke up to the sound of the train wheels clacking. It was 5:30 in the morning. I was so tired but also so thrilled to be traveling to a new destination. Soon after we woke from the comfy and unique accommodation of the train, we all gathered our belongings and hopped […]

Under the Milky Way Tonight

Under the Milky Way Tonight

On April 3, 2018 we stayed at the Takarakka bush resort in Carnarvon Gorge. One of the many highlights of Carnarvon George is the sky. Specifically, the entire Milky Way. Which, as our tutor brought up, used to be a sight that everyone could see. It is because of our cities light pollution that […]
