Overseas project(s):   Youth Culture in India
Expected graduation: May 2017
About me: I'm a junior Sociology & Anthropology major at Lewis and Clark College and this Wordpress is focused on my study abroad program to India! I'll be in Delhi, Chennai and Varanasi, hopefully with some side trips to Ladakh, Rishikesh and Goa. I grew up in Los Angeles, CA in a creative household, which cultivated my love for visual art and music. I'm very passionate about social justice work, particularly surrounding gender and racial equality. I spend a great deal of time in the outdoors, mostly hiking and camping, but I'm also learning to whitewater kayak. I've been bouldering for about a year and a half, and that has become a huge part of my life!

Sweet Moments - Coming up with only one moment, feeling or experience to write about for the Varanasi portion of the program has been a really challenging task. This has easily been my favorite stop that the program itself has made. Despite the warnings that we received about how dirty, busy, crazy Varanasi, (Banaras as we learned to […]
Gents Only, Ladies Not Allowed - Chennai Entry: Gents Only, No Ladies Allowed For this entry, I want to write about a specific difficult incident that happened while in Chennai. This post does not represent my experience in Chennai as a whole, just one experience I had about a week ago. There was one night during my three weeks in Chennai […]
Youth Culture in India - UPDATED PROJECT PROPOSAL Just after a couple of weeks in Delhi, I decided to change my research project topic completely. This decision is well-covered in my other post, so here I’ll just explain my plans for the project, and the work I’ve done on it thus far. My project is focused on the interaction between […]
Shifting Research//Shifting Expectations -   Deciding on a research topic before arriving in India was a task that I anticipated struggling with. Plenty of ideas came to mind, but knowing which one would work best, which would be plausible or interesting, was difficult to determine. Regardless, I had to come up with a solid idea before embarking on the […]
Relationships With Water: Proposed Research - My proposed research topic for the time I will spend in India is focused on the relationship that Indian people have to water, from Delhi, to Chennai, to Varanasi. I’ll investigate why there is such a frequent connection between human beings and water, (aside from the obvious biological need for hydration) looking at the association […]
History Of India: Reading Questions - History of India Questions 1) Describe an aspect of ancient Indian history that is likely to have continuing relevance in contemporary India. How might your time in India benefit from having some awareness of this period of Indian history? In the beginning of The History of India, the author discusses the caste system, which has […]

Diving Deeper into Coral Reef Ecology at Lady Elliot Island

Diving Deeper into Coral Reef Ecology at Lady Elliot Island

Another day in paradise. Today marked our third day on Lady Elliot Island, and it’s easy to see that we’re all getting used to this. Waking up early isn’t a challenge with the bright sun and the cacophony of seabirds, but for once no one is upset, as our first activity is a quick snorkel […]

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Journey to the top of Queensland – 5/4/18

Today marked our last day at Carnarvon, with our next stop to be the Great Barrier Reef. Although we’ve stayed at Carnarvon Gorge longer than expected due to the cyclone off the eastern coast, it allowed us to explore even more of the beautiful park. We were woken again by the sounds of Laughing Kookaburras, […]

Great Times at Great Kepple

Great Times at Great Kepple

April 7, 2018 Our first full day on Great Kepple Island! We spent the morning in lecture learning about coral, coral reefs (there’s a difference!), conservation and the general weather trends that can dictate the biogeography of the ocean. While some had come into this program with invertebrate knowledge from classes at Lewis and Clark, […]

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

Planes, trains, automobiles and the amazing reef!

On April 10th I woke up to the sound of the train wheels clacking. It was 5:30 in the morning. I was so tired but also so thrilled to be traveling to a new destination. Soon after we woke from the comfy and unique accommodation of the train, we all gathered our belongings and hopped […]

Under the Milky Way Tonight

Under the Milky Way Tonight

On April 3, 2018 we stayed at the Takarakka bush resort in Carnarvon Gorge. One of the many highlights of Carnarvon George is the sky. Specifically, the entire Milky Way. Which, as our tutor brought up, used to be a sight that everyone could see. It is because of our cities light pollution that […]
