We had two workshops that took place on the Lewis &Clark College campus in the Platteau studio on Saturday, March 18th and Friday, April 7th. When participants arrived we had already set up the art and questions around the room. This allowed them to take in the art but also keep the focus of the discussion questions in mind. Index cards were placed around the art, giving them a space for them to write and read anonymous questions and comments.
After viewing the art and pondering the questions, we got together to talk about our thoughts and the questions and comments that were left on the index cards. Participants would interject and point out a connection that they saw. We took notes on a giant piece of butcher paper. After a while, we explained concept mapping to them, provided an example, and gave them sheets of paper to make concept maps themselves based on the art and our conversation. We then talked about our concept maps together, and gave people a chance to use a second color to add more to their map after the discussion. To conclude our workshop we took a large piece of paper and drew out a concept map, focusing on what the cultural and institutional influences on and perceptions of rats are.
