2004: GE Task Force Report

September 1, 2004 By James Proctor

The 2004 GE Task Force report encapsulates a time of change and disagreement among CAS faculty, and upon hindsight reflects the transition from Inventing America to Exploration & Discovery as our core curriculum. The report also includes recommendations for the GE distribution requirement, though no distribution changes were made at this time.

The report notes two major obstacles:

  • “There are profound divisions within the faculty with regard to the first year program of General Education,” with preferences ranging from a shared syllabus to “absolute [student] autonomy.”
  • The second obstacle addresses tradeoffs between the GE and major curricula: “There is a profound disagreement between administration and departments as to whether of not the current voting faculty is sufficient to provide sufficient sections of limited enrollment first year courses while maintaining quality programs of instruction in the several majors.”
