feedback frenzy: a smorgasbord of salient counsel.

March 18, 2015 By Ben Small

Dear Readers,

It is unto you that I will divulge the highly anticipated results of my Honors Committee reading of my first draft.

Here’s a quick summary of things I need to work on:

– Explicate Heidegger’s notion of dwelling more thoroughly (and make clear that I’m not advocating his philosophy in any fascist sort of way!).

-Clarify my use of “we,” “us.” I.e. discuss “the Anthropos.” Who are they/we? And clarify what Will Steffen, Paul J. Crutzen and John R. McNeill mean when they talk about “the Human Enterprise.”

-Complicate my discussion of Modernism and what I’ve been calling (from Latour) the modernist epistemology.

-Graphical representations (inscriptions/transcriptions) as a means of understanding things that cannot be understood in other ways. And these inscriptions as material culture.

-Wonder, Humility, and Play not sufficiently toothy to deal with challenges of Anthropocene. I.e. how can greenhouse gas emissions be mitigated by such a fluffy literary indulgence?

I was also directed towards a couple of articles that I am now internalizing.

Overall, I’m satisfied with the suggestions I received, and only thirst for more! I wonder if it would be totally out of line to just shoot off drafts of my thesis to a couple scholars I’ve been reading…
