In continuing my research with my concentration, I came across an LA times article reporting on the first GMO animal in the USA to be legally endorsed by the FDA for country-wide human consumption.
Of course, there was a private company behind the works: AquaBounty Technologies Inc.
The debate over GM animals is not a new one, but this recent event has been met with strong opposition, most notably from Alaska. This is understandable, for Alaska has an enormous industry surrounding wild and farmed salmon. “Traditional” scientific opposition to this matter was answered by claims that the AquaBounty salmon is infertile (eliminating the possibility of modified genes escaping into the wild populations) and is landlocked (producing facilities are located inland, reducing the risk of individuals escaping into the wild).
I will have to do further research into primary literature to choose which stance I represent on this issue, but there is little doubt that this type of aquaculture will be playing a larger role in the USA in the future thanks to the trailblazing of the legalization of AquaBounty salmon.
