Managing America’s Massive Outdoor Playground
Every year, millions converge on our nation’s great outdoors. Capitalizing on a diversity of scenic landscapes and natural areas, they engage in an array of recreational activities: rock climbing, mountain biking, boating, backpacking, ATV riding, and so much more.
So how do recreation providers and agencies manage this vast outdoor playground?
How do they satisfy the high demand for outdoor recreation, while simultaneously protecting the sanctity of our prized outdoor landscapes?
We explore these questions and more in FES 251-Recreation Resource Management.
This 4-credit course examines the multitude of land and water resources used as staging grounds for outdoor recreation. We consider the ecological impacts of outdoor recreation, and how natural, historical, and cultural resources can be sustainably managed within the context of these impacts.
You are introduced to various agencies and interest groups, issues confronting these stakeholders, and contemporary management approaches for addressing topics such as satisfaction, crowding, and conflict.
