Some environmental studies majors desire to take certain breadth or concentration courses outside of Lewis & Clark, including nearby public institutions such as Portland State University and Portland Community College. Lewis & Clark’s transfer policy can be found here. In general, transferrable coursework to LC:
- Is college-level and not remedial in nature.
- Is judged to be consistent with the Lewis & Clark curriculum.
- Is awarded a letter grade of C or better.
- Is taken on the college or university campus (not via online or distance learning).
- Does not duplicate credit already granted for completed coursework.
- Does not exceed the residency requirement, which states that only four credits of transfer coursework earned after the student reaches senior status (93 credits) may be applied to the degree.
Both PSU and PCC are on quarter systems (one quarter credit = 0.67 LC credits). It is likely that, if you transfer a quarter-system course, it will not be equivalent to the 4 or 5 credits typically found in LC breadth and concentration courses. Since the ENVS Program requires 60 credits (single majors), a petition may be required to graduate with less than 60 credits.
- To apply for courses at PSU, follow the instructions for a non-degree applicant.
- To register for PCC classes, follow the instructions on their page.
A sample list of available courses (last updated spring 2015) is here.
Please check with institution to confirm course offerings, as these examples may be outdated.
An important reminder: before you enroll, make sure to contact the LC Registrar to ensure any course is transferrable.
