34th Gender Studies Symposium

Greetings ENVS community!
The 34th Annual Gender Studies Symposium is coming up next week on March 11-13. This year’s symposium theme is “Material Conditions: Gender, Sexuality, and Capitalism.” Here are a few events that may be of particular interest to faculty and students in the ENVS department:
  • An interactive workshop investigating the relationship of feminist activism, capitalistic exploitation, and experiences of disability will take place on Wednesday March 11th from 11:30am-1:00pm in the Gregg Pavilion
  • Several different activists/scholars/community leaders will be addressing the epidemic of houselessness and LGBT Space in a panel on Wednesday March 11th from 1:45-3:15pm in the Council Chambers
  • A keynote address examining the specificities of neoliberal security in India, and the relation between neoliberalism and the security state will feature Inderpal Grewal, a professor of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at Yale University. The address is on Wednesday, beginning at 7pm in the Council Chambers
  • You might be interested in a panel titled “In Circulation, Mobility, Migration, and Transnationalism” as studying patterns of migration is a key component in environmental studies. The panel promises three incredible speakers and will take place on Thursday, March 12th from 9:45 to 11:15 in Stamm
  • Professor Reiko Hillyer will be moderating a panel called “Powerful Voices: Agents of Resistance and Social Change” from 11:30am to 1:00pm in Stamm on Thursday for all those activists eager to fix the world through learning first
  • Take note of Deviance and Pathology: Intersections of Illness, Queerness, and Disability. This panel is on Thursday, includes two students (one is an alumni) and will be held from 1:45 to 3:15pm in Stamm
  • FOOD PEOPLE! Join ENVS alum Beau Broughton and other scholars for a discussion of Excess and Deprivation and Gendered Appetites. The panel takes place from 9:45-11:15 am in Stamm on Friday!
  • Somehow, Samson Harman’s dreams have come true and he will be presenting Eric A. Stanley for a keynote lecture on Friday evening! Samson is a junior Environmental Studies Major. The presentation is titled Blood Lines: AIDS, Affective Accumulation, and Viral Labor. Join us in the Council Chambers on Friday at 7pm for the final event of this years’ symposium!
  • There will be art up throughout March 11th to the 13th in Stamm. Stop by to see the work of students and international artists.
Can’t wait to catch you all at this exciting, interdisciplinary program. As some of you know, the Gender Studies Symposium is renowned across the country by scholars, other institutions, and activists. For those who may feel like they are not “tuned” to gender studies, here is an incredible opportunity to witness the work of top researchers, view art by fellow students, and engage with the changing nature of gender, as influenced by capitalism.
Thanks!
Samson
