This fall support an elementary school garden as a Garden Club volunteer through Growing Gardens! We’re recruiting folks willing to commit ONE afternoon a week for an 8-10 week session. Growing Gardens works at local Portland public schools where 50% or more of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Our Youth Grow Program bridges garden based education with school curriculum. Below are more details:

As a Garden Club volunteer you will:
- Volunteer for youth alongside a lead Garden Educator
- Learn classroom management and garden activities
- Weekly curriculum developed by Youth Grow and Growing Gardens Staff
- The opportunity to participate in the Schools United Neighborhoods (S.U.N.) program
- Smiles, wonder, gardening fun and vegetable eating with youngsters!
Examples of activities may include:
We work to provide a seasonally appropriate curriculum that takes into account the individual site and students’ abilities.
- Plant vegetable seeds & transplants
- Investigate a worm bin system and learn about worms
- Learn about bugs and other garden critters and going on a bug hunt
- Learn about compost and the nutrient cycle
- Make art: paper making, painting stones, seed art etc
- Botany and life cycles
- Learn about flowers and pollinators
- Cook and prepare food from the garden
- Tool and knife safety
- Play games: plant personification, earthworm tag, ladybug/aphid tag, seed match etc
