Farmers Market Coordinator
New Columbia Farmers Market (Village Gardens) and St Johns Farmers Market (St. Johns Center for Opportunity) are partnering up for the 2017 farmers market season. The partnership will strengthen efforts of both markets to support local farmers and hot food vendors, provide a space for weekly celebration, support accessibility to fresh and local produce, and meet the needs of our North Portland community. The Farmers Market Coordinator will be the lead on both partner markets for the 2017 season. Application Deadline: March 17, 2017.
New Columbia Farmers Market (NCFM) is in its fourth year as an incubator farmers market based in New Columbia, Oregon’s largest affordable housing neighborhood. In 2016 NCFM hosted 17 vendors, most of whom were residents of the immediate neighborhood. NCFM works directly with first time farmers and vendors in a supportive learning environment to promote sustainable business development. As a project of Village Gardens, NCFM, with the help of Community Leaders, brings together youth farmers, refugee farmer families, Village Market healthy corner store, community gardens and a community orchard.
St. Johns Farmers Market (SJFM) is in its ninth season operating as a mid-sized (35+ vendors), locally run farmers market. The mission of the market is to support a local, sustainable food supply while providing opportunity for emerging farmers, contributing to the health of all local residents, encouraging cross-cultural connections and dialogue, and enhancing the community and business vitality of St. Johns. SJFM is a program of St. Johns Center for Opportunity.
Summer Program Leader – Food Works
SUMMARY: The Food Works Summer Program is an 8-week youth summer program designed for and by Food Works youth. The Summer Program Leader will co-lead a crew of 10 youth with a Food Works Youth Crew Leader four days a week at the Village Gardens office, on the FoodWorks Farm on Sauvie Island, and at various volunteer sites in Portland. Application Deadline: March 31, 2017.
The Summer Program Leader will be responsible for coordinating public transportation, leading workshops and cooking programming, acting as a mentor and role model to youth participants, and supporting youth to meet the standards and expectations of the program.
As the primary adult support to a team of 10 youth participants, this position will be a good opportunity to practice and grow in youth development skills and creating positive youth-adult partnerships. The Summer Program Leader will receive training and support from current Food Works staff before and during the summer program.
SCHEDULE: The Summer Program Leader’s weekly schedule is Tuesday- Friday 8:30am-3:00pm (this is 26 hours/week). The position runs from May 17, 2017 to Aug 31, 2017.
Farm Assistant – Food Works
SUMMARY: Food Works is a dynamic youth leadership development and employment program that empowers 14-18 year-olds to be leaders in their community. As a youth-led farm project, Food Works participants and adult staff partner to manage, maintain, harvest, donate and sell certified-organic produce from their 2 acre farm on Sauvie Island. The Farm Assistant will assist the Farm Coordinator in providing maintenance to the Food Works Farm and surrounding areas. Duties will include but are not limited to weeding vegetable beds, moving and tending to irrigation, amending and bed preparation, seeding and other farm-related duties as instructed by the Farm Coordinator or other program staff.
This position will support the Food Works youth team leaders and the summer crew on their farm during harvest days. This position will also provide support to a team of youth each week at a Saturday Farmer’s Market, providing back-up to the youth, guidance, and transportation of produce and supplies to the market.
Shift Lead – Village Market
SUMMARY: Village Market is a non-profit, community-designed and operated, healthy corner grocery store in the heart of New Columbia in North Portland. Village Market strives to build community, promote health, offer fresh and healthy produce, grocery and prepared food items. Village Market is an exciting opportunity to work for a growing business in the dynamic North Portland community.

The Shift Lead position leads efforts to ensure Village Market customers have an exceptional experience by making sure they are treated to excellent customer service in a store that is clean and well stocked. The Shift Lead position focuses on setting the pace and tone for the day by role modeling positive energetic leadership, supporting and coaching Grocery Clerks to complete daily operations tasks, and leading the open, operation, and close of the Village Market store.
The Shift Lead position is responsible for managing a grocery product category in the Village Market by tracking weekly inventory, making weekly orders, managing retail pricing, creatively stocking and merchandising product displays, and driving product sales.
This Shift Lead position will perform the full range of duties at the Village Market including: excellent customer service; accurate cash handling; efficient inventory maintenance; safe food preparation; and maintain a clean, organized and positive work environment. The Shift Lead is also expected to provide basic training and supervision of volunteers and interns in the store.
