The Consensus Building Institute (CBI) is a not-for- profit organization created by leading practitioners and theory builders in the field of dispute resolution. CBI serves public, non-profit, and private clients globally by providing facilitation, collaboration, and dispute resolution services, training in negotiation and consensus building techniques, and evaluative research.
CBI also plays a key role in helping to build the intellectual capital of the field through pioneering work on negotiation as an organizational competence, documentation of best practices in multi-stakeholder consensus building and dispute resolution, and online negotiation and collaboration training. CBI senior staff are associated with the MIT-Harvard Public Disputes Program and the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning.

Job Description
This is an opportunity for a highly motivated professional to engage in the field of multi-party negotiations and consensus building. The Project Coordinator, expected to be full time, will work on a range of administrative and project-based tasks to support senior staff across the organization. The position will be based in Washington, D.C., and will support CBI projects and staff across the US. Some travel will be expected. Tasks include:
- Support facilitation and mediation projects (take meeting notes, produce meeting summaries, conduct background research, interface with project participants, assist at public meetings)
- Coordinate and manage logistics for project meetings and workshops including attendance and contact lists, catering, and meeting supplies
- Assist with conflict assessments (interview scheduling, logistics management, protocol development, interviewing, analysis, background research)
- Conduct research and evaluation projects (survey development, interviewing, analysis, writing)
- Assist with presentation and materials development, report writing and copy editing, and production of materials for trainings and meetings
- Assist with proposal development
- Assist with external communications, by drafting content for CBI’s web page and marketing materials
- Management of DC office administrative needs (managing travel receipts and travel for project staff, liaison to co-working space, ordering supplies, telecommunications troubleshooting, furniture acquisition/removal, and related tasks)
We are looking for someone who is eager to learn about the field and willing to work at least two years at CBI.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor level degree in relevant discipline (social science, environmental planning, public policy, natural resources conservation and management, diplomacy, law, business, conflict resolution)
- Two to four years work experience in a professional organization, preferably a government agency, consulting firm, or business.
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in working with a project team
- Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced professional environment
- Detail orientation and initiative in clarifying needs and requirements for event logistics, documents and other activities and products with senior staff
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, responsibly, and diligently while also being an effective team player
- Strong work ethic
- Ability to engage with a wide range of diverse individuals and organizations
- Adept at Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and preferably data base basis management, on-line survey tools, and other computer or web-based tools
- Interest in the conflict resolution and consensus building field, and in further developing relevant knowledge and skills
- Located in the Washington D.C. office
Preferred Qualifications
- Work experience related to one or more of CBI’s practice areas: Energy, Environment, and Land Use; Global Development; Social Policy and Cultural Resources; Corporate Stakeholder Engagement; Organizational Governance and Strategy; Commercial Agreements
- Able to work with technology tools to engage stakeholders virtually and in face-to- face meetings
- Fluency in a foreign language
