“Memorializing the Future Past”
“Literature in the Anthropocene is increasingly concerned with the effects of climate change on habitats both exotic and familiar, meditating on the loss of jungle, of ice, of a multitude of species, including, perhaps, Homo sapiens. This talk explores how ecological anxiety and anticipatory mourning are expressed in works by W.G. Sebald (1944-2001) and Yoko Tawada (b. 1960), focusing specifically on the figure of the polar bear, both alive and dead.”
