If you are interested in Climate, Energy, or Environmental Policy, then you may wish to tune in to a keynote address by Jim Hanson on Monday, Oct. 30th, from 9-10am Pacific / 12-1pm Eastern. He will be giving a keynote address to an invitation-only workshop for non-governmental organizations from the environmental, development, natural resources and human rights communities at George Washington University (in conjunction with the Environmental & Energy Management Institute). The workshop will focus on the potential role of carbon dioxide removal technologies, sometimes characterized as a form of “climate geoengineering,” as a climate response measure. Approximately 87% of the integrated assessment models incorporated into the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change contemplate large-scale use of such technologies, especially Bioenergy and Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), to hold temperatures to below 2C. However, many contest the potential effectiveness of such options, as well as express concerns about potential costs and adverse impacts at both the national and transboundary levels.
The program for the meeting, which includes a keynote presentation by Dr. James Hansen, can be found here:https://eemi.seas.gwu.edu/carbon-dioxide-removalnegative-emissions.
We are also live-streaming most of this event. You can register for the live stream here: https://eemi.seas.gwu.edu/registration-carbon-dioxide-removalnegative-emissions-live-stream. We also contemplate posting the recordings on both GWU’s website and the Climate Engineering Assessment Forum approximately two weeks after the event.
