Are you interested in International Political Economy, Sustainable Development, Clean Energy Economy, or International Economics? The Political Economy Program invites you to learn more about careers in these fields. Tuesday, January 23, 3:30-4:30pm in JRHH 205, snacks provided, for a conversation with special guest Kristy Mayer, analytics manager at Opwer, a data analytics firm.
Her professional and educational experiences include:
· Energy Economist, South Asia, Energy (Sustainable Development) Office, The World Bank
· International Economist, Office of International Trade Policy, US Department of the Treasury
· Financial Analyst / Assistant Chief of Staff for Timothy Geithner, Federal Reserve Bank of New York
· MPA in Economics and Public Policy, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University (2011)
· BA in Economic Theory, New York University (2006)
The objective is to help students to
– become familiar with careers in the field of international political economy
– become familiar with the process of navigating a career (internships, entry level jobs, grad school, etc)
– think about their own process of evaluating the fit of various paths/jobs
First, Kristy will talk about her career path, addressing questions such as:
– What did you study and what were you interested in in college?
– How did you decide what positions to apply for, how you learned about jobs, and what your experience was like in each one?
– Did your values/ethics play into your decision making processes? If so, how?
– What advice do you have for college students interested in careers in IPE?
– What have been the most rewarding and frustrating parts of your career?
– For students focused on social justice and change, is working for the government or intternational organizations a good fit? Why/not?
– Is there anything you want to share that is specific to your experience navigating this career field as a woman?
– How did you know when to go to grad school and where to go?
Next, we’ll open the floor to student questions.
Finally, Rocky Campbell, Director of career services will close the session with information about resources/next steps.
Please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions. I look forward to seeing you there!
Best,
Elizabeth Bennett
