Spring 2018 College Advising Center Student Workshops

The College Advising Center will be offering several student workshops this semester. We will once again have a “Key Three” series aimed at CORE 107 students, offered in collaboration with the Writing Center. This series, which starts next week, may also be useful to students in any class requiring research-based writing or presentations. Additionally, we will continue to hold workshops to help students with other skills here at L&C and beyond (including an “Exploring Law School” workshop this Thursday, Feb. 1.)

COLLEGE ADVISING CENTER WORKSHOPS, SPRING 2018

All students are welcome at this semester’s workshops.  If you cannot attend, but would like help with these topics, you can make an appointment with a college advisor on the College Advising Center website.

THE KEY THREE: Research, Writing, and Presentation Skills

Workshop 1: Worry Less, Write More: Beginning the College Research Paper

Wednesday, February 7 at 3:00 – 4:15 PM in Howard 102

This workshop will introduce students to campus resources that can support them in creating a strong research paper and suggest ways to understand each course’s distinct expectations for research and writing. Additionally, students will learn how to manage their time, develop their ideas, and keep track of their sources in the early stages of the research-paper-writing process.

Workshop 2: Staying on Track: The Writing Process for Research Papers

Wednesday, March 14 at 3:00 – 4:00 PM in Howard 102

This workshop will help students learn how to organize their research into cohesive, persuasive arguments in papers that are generally longer than what they wrote in the previous semester. We’ll also discuss strategies for writing effective introductions and conclusions, which become more essential as papers grow longer and more complex. Finally, we’ll talk about strategies for time management and motivation throughout a long-term writing project.

Workshop 3: The Craft of Class Presentations: Sharing Research Effectively

Wednesday, April 4 at 3:00 – 4:00 PM in Howard 102

This workshop will help students plan and deliver presentations that stand out for the right reasons, in their CORE 107 course and beyond. Students will have a chance to analyze sample presentations while considering how to organize and incorporate research into their own. We’ll also cover how to effectively use spoken and body language, as well as audiovisual aids, to effectively convey ideas and enthusiasm.

ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS, Spring 2018

February 15 at 3:30 – 4:30 PM in Howard 116

Everyone has different learning preferences. Come learn how to use them to your advantage! This event is co-presented by the College Advising Center and Student Support Services.
