Grounding in Uncertain Geology: How art will help us learn to live within the Anthropocene epoch
Capstone file(s): Show file | Show file | Show file
This capstone looks ways in which contemporary artists are working with themes of the Anthropocene in their art. This includes a background of the theory and discussion regarding the Anthropocene from various humanities scholars, before diving deeper into what themes I look for when evaluating the work of other artists. As an artist myself, I have conducted an 8 month self-reflective accompaniment to the capstone, in which I also respond to the themes of the Anthropocene.
As this capstone is a non-thesis outcome, it takes the form of both a (shorter) scholarly essay as well as a reflection paper on what it means to work in an interdisciplinary way. Additionally, my 2-credit independent study focuses on bookmaking, for which the outcome will be a short, published book on the subject of this thesis. While the book is an additional piece, and the outcome of my independent study, it is a vital piece in the overall project.
