Background: The legal situation for animals, especially those on farms, tends to regard these animals as property or commodities. Meat consumption has drastically risen over the past few decades, resulting in far more animals being killed for human consumption. Therefore, it is essential to understand how to best promote the welfare of animals on farms.
What are the best ways to improve the welfare of animals on farms? Why has the United States failed to pass farm animal welfare legislation that the European Union has passed?
Methodology: Compare nations for companion animal protection, healthcare, and farm animal welfare laws, and look for correlations between stronger and weaker protections in these different categories. Analyze economic incentives for higher and lower rates of meat consumption, and for stronger and weaker farm animal welfare laws.
Results: There are significant correlations between aforementioned types of laws.
