My research has investigated the question: How might the forests of Japan be re-purposed in light of global developments that make old use patterns economically in-viable? Understanding the way that forests are managed requires an understanding of who owns the forests and what they intend to use them for. By mapping and evaluating the use of a sample of forests around the base of Mt. Fuji, I was able to characterize Japanese land-use patterns and property rights. I intend to work within the current network of property owners and management techniques to evaluate the viability of alternative management practices.
