I will be researching how Mt. Fuji is represented in modern Japanese culture, how these representations relate to historical pictorial traditions, and which ones were emphasized in Japan’s bid to have Mt. Fuji declared a World Heritage Status. I will also investigate the relationship between UNESCO’s representation of Fujisan (Mt. Fuji) and the document crafted in Japan in 2012 , Nomination of Fujisan for Inscription on the World Heritage List. Specifically, I will investigate which kinds of representations appeared to have greatest resonance with UNESCO in deciding to grant Mt. Fuji World Heritage Status and how that relates to the “Japanese” image of Fujisan. To capture and understand the “Japanese” image of Mt. Fuji, I took photographs of the different ways I saw Fuji represented in Tokyo, Fujinomiya, and Fujiyoshida.
