In this project, I investigated the specific ways in which the values of intentional communities in Oregon compare and contrast with Utopian values. Specifically, I looked at how several of these communities practice their ideologies through interviews and examinations of their mission statements. A significant conclusion was that intentional communities in Oregon today are more set on living in accordance with mainstream consumer culture and modernity. The communities that I interviewed all rejected the values of capitalism and hold values of collectivization, but many of them have accepted integration into modernity.
Framing: To what extent do intentional communities exemplify utopian values?
Focus: What are the values of modern intentional communities in Oregon today?
