Urban agriculture (UA) is a global movement that brings farming practices within cities boundaries. The reasons for these practice very around the world, especially between the global north and south. We see the global south using urban farming out of necessity for food security while the global north has more of a sustainability and community development approach.
We wanted to see if this wealth divide in reasons for UA also transcends to the local level within Portland. Are low income households impacted in some way by these community gardens and if so in what ways? Also we will compare our findings to that of another group in our class to see if the impacts are different between the low and high income households in Portland.
We will be making GIS maps, doing statistics, constructing a survey and working with the organization Grow Portland to come up with our results over the next few weeks.
