With increasing urbanization, many cities are facing problems of severe traffic congestion. The status quo for dealing with this problems seems to be expanding highways and building new lanes, but the problem doesn’t go away because the growth hasn’t stopped. Another problems these cities are facing is maintaining high air quality because of all the traffic. One creative and modern solution counteract these problems that many cities are implementing is public bike sharing systems. The idea behind these systems is that they are easy, accessible, and convenient for people, so by using them, cars are taken off the roads, which reduces congestions and car emissions.
An added benefit of BSS’s is that they complements already existing public transportation infrastructure. Bike stations placed at bus and tram stations allow people who use public transportation to bike the last leg of their commute instead of walk. Perhaps the largest motivation behind the implementation of BSS’s is that biking simply makes people happy.
