Concerns surrounding salmon come from a variety of perspectives. Some organizations and activists are concerned with the welfare of the salmon, while others are concerned with the restoration of the salmon population. Dedication to preservation of salmon habitat stems from a variety of concerns as well; an anthropocentric perspective will generally focus on salmon, as a resource for human consumption and use, while an ecocentric perspective will generally focus on the position of salmon in the ecosystem, and on biodiversity. The Pacific Northwest, particularly the Columbia river, invokes a Native American perspective, as salmon carry cultural significance to Native American peoples of this region. Water quality is of immense importance to both the welfare of salmon and other marine animals, and conservation of freshwater ecosystems. Our focus question guiding our project is : Does water quality in Portland salmon bearing streams meet the basic needs for salmon and who is invested in ensuring salmon have these needs met?
Our findings are yet to come as we plan to finish the descriptive/explanatory portion of the project in ENVS 220.
