Social Organization in Participatory Irrigation Management
Capstone file(s): Show file | Show file | Show file
The drive to privatize agricultural water is occurring at a growing rate, where the control of irrigation water is slowly being taken away from communities by government interests. As the demand for water continues to grow, the demand for water management, regulation, and planning are also increasing. Community irrigation is a form of social organization that has members from the community act as equal common property resource managers. While all participatory irrigation systems can be understood as solutions to the tragedy of the commons, I argue that equitable water management is more apparent where participants have higher degrees of autonomy.
