I was born in Berkeley, California, but moved to New Jersey when I was quite young. I grew up in a small town and tight-nit community and appreciate this aspect of my childhood and adolescence. However, living in New Jersey, I always felt constrained and unable to enjoy the beauty of the natural and uninhabited landscape. I lived in Zimbabwe and Trinidad for my father's sabbaticals and believe that I have a well-rounded perspective of the world and its varying cultures. I moved to Portland, Oregon, because I could sense that I belonged in a region where people saw the value in wilderness and individuality. This past summer, I was a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska. This was an experience that has changed me in many ways. I feel more hardened and tough yet also wiser and more appreciative of different perspectives and backgrounds. Most significantly, I became very interested in fisheries, specifically salmon fisheries and how they are regulated to sustain the salmon runs and maintain their commercial viability.
