[First: are you logged in?…it’s required to complete all Skills…]

Before you learn a bunch of digital skills, it’s worth pondering why you are being asked to do this! That’s the intent of this badge.

Let’s start with a big question: What are your academic goals at Lewis & Clark College? We bet you already have a good answer for this question…but reflect on it for a moment, please.

Now, let’s ask a related question: What digital skills may help you reach these goals? You may not have such a quick answer for this question, but below are a few thoughts on how digital skills, and Lewis & Clark’s WordPress-based DS (Digital Scholarship) multisite, may connect to your goals:

  • Communication: You are cultivating a variety of ways to communicate at LC: writing, speaking, and hopefully digital communication as well, which could become a powerful way for you to connect your scholarship and passion with many other people. Students in certain LC departments and courses have the opportunity to get their own DS sites.
  • Life After LC: Doing digital means you’re building employable skills. And doing digital via the DS multisite helps you build skills in WordPress, the largest web platform today, with growing use around the world…not a bad item to add to your resumé. In contrast to popular commercial platforms like SquareSpace, WP is open source, meaning you’re not feeding some corporation.
  • Life At LC: Doing digital via the DS multisite means you get to share and discover your work with others in your LC community—whether fellow participants in overseas and off-campus programs, students in your department (example here), or everyone on the DS multisite (example here).

Submission requirements: To earn this Doing Digital badge, write a concise paragraph in the submission box below on your academic goals at LC, and how digital skills may relate to these goals. (Don’t worry if you’re still forming your thoughts, or if you later change your mind!) This Skill will be approved by a student helper checking your submission, so make sure it’s fully complete.
