Welcome to User Level Skill #2! Every user on the DS multisite has a profile: a name, bio, and avatar. Developing a profile allows others to learn a little bit about you, and is required of all DS users, as it’s a good way to humanize online communications.
- Have you earned the Doing Digital Skill badge yet? If not, go back and do that first!
- Remember, you need to be logged in to complete any Skills submission.
Here are some terms a logged in WordPress user should know, which we’ll use here and in other Skills:
- Front-end vs. back-end view: The front-end view of a site is what a visitor sees; the back-end view is what you can also see when logged in. On the back end, a user will edit their profile and do posts; later, you’ll learn how an admin does a lot of work on the backend.
- Admin bar and dashboard: The admin bar shows up at the top of the frontend and backend window when you are logged in. The dashboard is the default backend view for users (and admins).
To earn this Skill, follow the below steps, then follow the submission requirements at bottom. (Note: if you believe you have already done the below, read through it anyway just to confirm, then do the submission requirements at bottom.)
- Read the Edit Profile help page for instructions on how to edit your information.
- Edit your profile, and complete the two steps at the top of the help page (“Display name publicly as” and “Biographical info”).
- Now go to the top right of your profile add an avatar (a picture representing you). Save these changes.
- Important!: make sure you have successfully done the above. One quick way is to look at the upper right of the admin bar, where you should now see your avatar and display name. (Your bio won’t show up this way; edit your profile to see it again. Your bio will show up in other contexts on the DS multisite.)
Submission requirements: Please rollover your profile in the admin bar, then capture a screenshot showing your avatar and display name. Attach this screenshot below. In the submission box, answer the following question: “Was your profile experience easy? Did you encounter any errors or challenges?” This Skill will be approved by a student helper checking your submission, so make sure it’s fully complete.
