If you’d like to display images on your site, there are several Jetpack modules you could activate and experiment with, including Carousel and Tiled Galleries. Otherwise, if you are wanting to create a slider (slideshow) of images, we recommend RoyalSlider; see instructions below, and see our Flickr help page for one good way to shoot and manage photos.
Making a RoyalSlider Slider
A slider is the best way to display albums of images. The RoyalSlider plugin makes it easy to display content from a variety of sources, including Flickr, Instagram, and your media library. Using a Flickr album is recommended because images uploaded to media libraries need to be carefully managed. If you do choose to upload images with your media library, make sure to regularly manage and clean up your library so unneeded photos do not take up server space.
Follow the instructions below to make a RoyalSlider with Flickr:
- Navigate to RoyalSlider found on your Dashboard. Click Create New Slider > Flickr Gallery. Then enter a name to remember your slider.
- Enter all information here, including Flickr UserID and API (see right). Choose how many photos you want to display and the size of the images.
- Choose a template. The three at top are good, and feel free to try others.
- Check the Arrows option so your reader can navigate through the slider at their own pace.
- Check the Autoplay function so your slider will start automatically.
- If you gave your images titles in Flickr, check captions to display them.
- Make sure to save the slider!
- If you add new photos to your Flickr album, you will need to manually reload the slider to show the new photos in the Flickr album. This can be done by going back to your slider editing page and simply saving the slider again. Nothing about the Flickr API Key or Flickr UserID need to be changed.
Then click Embed This Slider to Site and copy/paste the shortcode that it gives you into a page or post on its own line where you want the slider to show up.
Follow the instructions below if you wish to upload images from featured images on posts to use in your slider:
- Navigate to RoyalSlider found on your Dashboard. Click Create New Slider > Posts slider. Then enter a name to remember your slider.
- Choose the post type to include in your slider (most likely post), the maximum number of images to include, how to order the posts (note: random order can be set in Miscellaneous options), and if you want a link to the post to be overlayed over the image.
- Finally, if you wish to only include featured images from posts with a certain taxonomy (categories, tags, global tags), select the particular tags you wish to include at the bottom. (note: Under Relation,”match all” will select only posts that have ALL selected taxonomies)
- Choose a template. The three at top are good, and feel free to try others.
- Check the Arrows option so your reader can navigate through the slider at their own pace.
- Check the Autoplay function so your slider will start automatically.
- If you gave your images titles and descriptions, check Captions to display them.
- Make sure to save the slider!
Then click Embed This Slider to Site and copy/paste the shortcode that it gives you into a page or post on its own line where you want the slider to show up.
